Where to Live in Bangalore: An Honest Area Guide
29 Jul 2026 · 7 min read
Bangalore does not have one center. It has several, and the right area depends almost entirely on where you work and what you want evenings and weekends to look like. This guide groups the city's main residential belts by who they suit best.
The startup core: Koramangala, Indiranagar, HSR Layout
These three carry Bangalore's cafe and startup culture. Koramangala puts you within walking distance of offices, restaurants and late-night food. Indiranagar trades a little office proximity for the city's best high street. HSR Layout is the slightly calmer, slightly cheaper sibling with excellent access to both the Outer Ring Road and Sarjapur Road.
Expect to pay a premium for all three. If the rent stings, look one ring outward: BTM Layout next to HSR, or Domlur and CV Raman Nagar next to Indiranagar.
The IT corridors: Whitefield, Bellandur, Sarjapur Road, Electronic City
If your office sits in a tech park, living on its corridor saves you hours every week. Whitefield and Bellandur serve the eastern parks, Sarjapur Road is the fastest-growing supply of new apartments, and Electronic City remains the most affordable of the four with direct elevated-road access.
New gated communities dominate here, which means better amenities per rupee than the central areas, at the cost of longer rides to the city's nightlife.
North Bangalore: Hebbal, Yelahanka, Hennur
The airport corridor changed north Bangalore. Hebbal works for airport-linked jobs and Manyata Tech Park, Yelahanka offers space and newer layouts, and Hennur sits between them with steadily growing apartment supply. Buyers get more appreciation story here; tenants get newer buildings for less rent than the east.
Classic Bangalore: Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Malleshwaram, Banashankari
South and west Bangalore's established localities offer tree-lined streets, legacy markets and a settled residential feel. Jayanagar and JP Nagar suit families who want parks and schools nearby. Malleshwaram is the heritage pick with excellent food and rail connectivity. Rentals here often come from long-time individual owners, which makes owner-direct deals especially common.
How to choose
Start from your commute, then subtract areas that break your budget, then visit the two or three that remain at evening rush hour. An area that feels fine on a Sunday morning can feel very different at 7 pm on a Tuesday. When you have shortlisted, tell us the areas and we will bring you owner-listed options inside them.
